As the new school year begins, the Prime Minister has written to parents and carers across England to reaffirm the government’s commitment to supporting families through its Plan for Change, with a focus on giving every child the best possible start in life.

In the letter, the Prime Minister acknowledges the challenges many families face, particularly around the cost of living, childcare affordability, and time pressures. He highlights a series of new and ongoing initiatives aimed at easing these burdens and improving early years support.

Key Announcements:

30 Hours of Funded Childcare:

From the end of parental leave to the start of primary school, eligible working parents will now benefit from 30 hours of government-funded childcare during term time—potentially saving families up to £7,500 per year.

Expanded Nursery and Wraparound Care:

Hundreds of new school-based nursery places are opening this September, with thousands more to follow. The government is also expanding wraparound childcare, including the introduction of a free Best Start Breakfast Club in every primary school.

Best Start Family Hubs:

Building on the legacy of Sure Start, these hubs offer a welcoming space for families to access a wide range of services—from baby feeding advice to toddler learning support.

The Prime Minister emphasised that this is just the beginning, with further support planned to ensure that no child’s background limits their future. He encouraged families to connect with local MPs and councils for more information and to explore the new centralised website: www.BestStartinLife.gov.uk.

In closing, he extended heartfelt thanks to parents, carers, grandparents, and professionals working with children, reaffirming his commitment to backing families and building a better future for all.
