Local health services

What's available for everyone

This is known as the universal offer.

GPs and dentists

GP surgeries are usually the first contact if you have a health problem. They can treat many conditions and give health advice. They can also refer you to other NHS services if needed for further support.

Pharmacy First provides support through assessment and prescription to treat a range of conditions, such as

  • earache
  • urinary tract infections
  • impetigo
  • infected insect bites
  • sore throats

You don't need a GP appointment. The service is for children over the age of 1, young people and adults.

Health visitors

Health visitors are specially trained nurses who support families with children from birth to age 5. They work with you to help you feel confident in your parenting journey and support you in raising a healthy, happy child.

Health visitors check on your baby’s health and development through regular visits and assessments. You can expect to see then at key stages, including a development review between 2 and 2½ years old. It is really important that you attend your appointment. This is the time any additional needs can be identified and support put in place as soon as possible.

They can also connect you with helpful advice, services, and local resources to support both you and your child.

School nursing team

Once your child turns 5 and starts primary school, the school nursing team takes over from the health visiting team. They'll  continue supporting your child’s health and wellbeing. This support is available throughout their time in school, up until they turn 19.

Every school in Walsall has a named school nurse who works closely with other professionals such as GPs, social workers, and community paediatricians.

School nurses are part of the NHS. They're usually based in local health centres.
