Looking after your health

As you get older, taking care of your health becomes really important. Looking after yourself helps you feel better, stay independent, and enjoy the things you love. There are lots of people and services who can support you along the way.

Staying healthy day‑to‑day

Looking after your health isn’t just about going to the doctor. It includes small things you can do every day, like:

  • eating a balanced diet and drinking water
  • getting enough sleep
  • being active in a way that works for you
  • taking breaks when you feel stressed
  • talking to someone if things feel tough

These small steps can make a big difference to how you feel.

Getting the right health support

As you get older, you might move from children’s health services to adult health services. This is called transition. It should happen gradually, so you feel comfortable and supported.

You can get help with:

  • regular health check‑ups
  • support for long‑term health conditions
  • mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • medication advice
  • specialist services if you need them

If you have an EHCP, your health needs will be included in your plan to make sure you keep getting the right support.

If you are 14 or over with a registered learning disability you can have an NHS annual health check.
