Careers guidance and support
Every school or college must have someone who provides careers advice. If you’re not sure who this is, you can ask a teacher or member of staff. They can tell you who to speak to.
When you're in Year 11, your school will support you with careers advice to help you plan what you want to do after Year 11. This should not be a new conversation, as you will already have been working towards your future goals.
You'll also have a meeting with a careers adviser. They will talk with you and your parent or carer about your post-16 options, such as college, internships, apprenticeships, training courses, or other pathways that interest you.
The National Careers Service can also help young people with SEND find the right training or employment. They can give advice on:
- building skills
- understanding your options
- getting ready for work or further training
This support is there to help you make choices that match your interests, strengths and goals.
If you have an EHCP
If you have an education, health and care plan (EHCP), your hopes, goals and plans for the future will be written into your EHCP and talked about at your reviews.
This means you can:
- share what's important to you and what you would like to do in the future
- be involved in making decisions about your education, training and future plans
- get support to understand your choices and make decisions that are right for you
- continue to receive support through your EHCP up to the age of 25, if you still need it
